The Water Babies (Charles Kingsley)
I used to like Ruskin Bond when I was a kid, but find him too senti nowadays.

After having watched the movie "Great Expectations" I read the unabridged version of the book. Dickens couldn't have written a better book. It describes situations in life much too aptly. Otherwise I feel that Dickens wrote gloomy stories.

There is a poem which often comes to my mind, which my grandmother taught me when I was around 9 or 10 yrs old. I have it in her handwriting. It will remain with me for the rest of my life.
The poem goes:
When all the world is young, lad,
And all the trees are green;
And every goose a swan, lad,
And every lass a queen;
Then hey for boot and horse, lad,
And round the world away:
Young blood must have its course, lad,
And every dog its day.

When all the world is old, lad,
And all the trees are brown;
And all the sport is stale, lad,
And all the wheels run down;
Creep home, and take your place there,
The spent and maimed among:
God grant you find one face there,
You loved when all was young.

(Taken from "The Water Babies", a classic by Charles Kingsley)
